Magical gene / ground and strong white

Burn

Pure black, and pure black regardless of what the coat is - up the legs and over the muzzle on one allele, through the mane and tail on the other, and both at once when a horse carries one of each.

Finding one

About 1 in 595 wild horses is born showing this. That is the whole of the supply: catch one, or make one with the carrot below. Breeds set their own pools and a breed built around this gene will carry it far more often than the wild population does.

The file

common/src/main/resources/horsegenetics/genes/burn.json — a data-driven gene, not a Java class. It is listed in the index.json beside it and registered by Genes' class initialiser at startup.

What it paints

Each outcome, described the way the gene file describes it, and then the layers that draw it in the order they are painted. The prose is the part a reader checks a bake against; the list underneath is what the engine actually did.

Full Burn

One copy of each allele, and the horse takes both fields at once - legs, muzzle and ventral shading black, and the mane and tail black as well. It counts as one mutation, not two.

  1. black up the legs — AXIS, painted with TOWARD
  2. the muzzle cap — PARTS, painted with TOWARD
  3. ventral shading — AXIS × NOISE, painted with TOWARD
  4. black mane, forelock and tail — PARTS, painted with TOWARD
  5. the bundles that hold out — STROKES, painted with TOWARD

Burnt Moon

Black from the hoof up all four legs, ending somewhere between the mid-cannon and just below the knee, and standing a little higher at the front of the leg than the back. A black cap over the muzzle enclosing both nostrils. And, on about three in five, a soft black gradient along the belly midline and under the jaw. Every edge here is soft. The value is the same black on any horse - it does not take the coat into account at all.

  1. black up the legs — AXIS, painted with TOWARD
  2. the muzzle cap — PARTS, painted with TOWARD
  3. ventral shading — AXIS × NOISE, painted with TOWARD

Burnt Mane and Tail

Mane, forelock and tail go black, and nothing on the body changes. Up to two strands in five may hold out and keep the base colour or white, in bundles rather than singly, and they hold out most often at the back of the crest and the far end of the tail.

  1. black mane, forelock and tail — PARTS, painted with TOWARD
  2. the bundles that hold out — STROKES, painted with TOWARD

Wild type
