Magical gene / ground and strong white
Panda
A strong white band round the belly and barrel, carrying on over the neck, head and tail, with the shoulder, the butt and all four legs keeping the coat - and the ears, eye patches and muzzle of a giant panda. A third allele carries the same marking worked in greys instead of white - dark where the pale form is light, and the same number of steps.

Finding one
About 1 in 1,786 wild horses is born showing this. That is the whole of the supply: catch one, or make one with the carrot below. Breeds set their own pools and a breed built around this gene will carry it far more often than the wild population does.
| Wild pair | Shows as | How often |
|---|---|---|
Pan/Pan | Panda | 0.002% — 1 in 50,000 |
Pan/Pnk | Panda | 0.0027% — 1 in 37,495 |
Pan/Pnc | Panda | 0.0027% — 1 in 37,495 |

Why it is built this way
The black allele is the white one with the light taken out of it, and it sits one rung under white in the dominance series - so every combination that existed before it keeps the outcome it had, and only the pairs carrying Pnk are new. The re-toning is a mapping rather than a repaint: every achromatic target moves into the dark end of the scale keeping its order and its spacing, and every SATURATED one is left alone, because that colour is the gene rather than its lightness.
What it paints
Each outcome, described the way the gene file describes it, and then the layers that draw it in the order they are painted. The prose is the part a reader checks a bake against; the list underneath is what the engine actually did.
Panda
White takes a band right round the middle of the horse - the belly and barrel, wrapping the whole circumference - and carries on over the neck, the head and the tail. The coat survives at the two ends of that band and nowhere else along the body: the shoulder in front of it, the butt and croup behind it, and all four legs the whole way down. The head is white apart from the ears, the muzzle and the patches round the eyes, which keep the coat and are what make it a panda; muzzle and ear markings are optional and the eye patches are a little stylised. Freckles of coat run along the top of the white band - small, or larger and fawn-like. The edges of the coloured regions are smooth: nothing about Panda is jagged or roaned, and no other marking shows on the white.
- white over the whole horse —
PARTS, painted withTOWARD - the coat kept on the shoulder, in front of the band —
AXIS, painted withTOWARD - the coat kept on the butt and croup, behind the band —
AXIS, painted withTOWARD - the coat kept on all four legs —
PARTS, painted withTOWARD - the coat kept on the ears, eyes and muzzle —
PARTS×SPOTS, painted withTOWARD - freckles of coat along the top of the band —

Black Panda
The same marking as the white form with the light taken out of it: a single near-black tone.

Coloured Panda
The same regions, with the ground in a colour the line carries rather than in white. Fully recessive: it takes two copies, and a single copy beside the white allele shows white. It never gives blue eyes, whatever the white form does.
